Week 12 : But I Paid for Nothing

–

I’ve been paying this premium for seven years. And I’ve got nothing back.”

It was a sentence that came up during a conversation about health insurance.

There had never been a major hospitalisation. No large claim. No moment when the insurance company had to pay a substantial amount.

So after seven years, the premiums started feeling like money that had simply disappeared.

Someone even told them:

“You’ve already paid so much. At least get your money’s worth.”

And that sentence changed the way they looked at the policy.

They were no longer asking: “Does this insurance still provide the protection I need?”

They were asking: “How do I get back what I’ve already paid?”

This is where Reference Dependence comes in.

We often judge financial decisions against a number that has already become important to us.

In this case, it was the total premium paid. Once that number became the reference point, not receiving a payout started feeling like a loss.

But insurance is different from an investment.

You don’t buy health insurance hoping to use it. You buy it hoping that if something goes wrong, you won’t have to bear the entire financial burden yourself.

No claim can sometimes mean exactly what you hoped for: You stayed healthy.

That doesn’t automatically mean the insurance wasn’t valuable.

The same psychology appears everywhere in money.

“I bought it at ₹500, so ₹400 feels cheap.”

“I paid ₹30,000, so I need to recover it.”

“I’ve already invested for ten years, so I can’t stop now.”

The number we started with can quietly become more important than the question we actually need to answer today.

So the next time you catch yourself saying,

“But I’ve already paid so much…”   Pause & Ask: “Am I making today’s decision based on what I need now—or trying to justify what I paid in the past?”

Because money already spent cannot be changed. But the next decision can.
