Week 8: The Investment Advice That Comes From the Jewelry Box

In many Indian homes, there is a piece of jewelry that carries a story.

A grandmother’s gold chain.

A mother’s wedding bangles.

A set of coins bought years ago.

And often, along with the jewelry comes a sentence:

“Gold has always been there for us.”

Maybe your family bought gold years ago.

It appreciated.

Maybe it helped during a difficult financial period.

Maybe your parents watched gold prices rise over the years.

And slowly, one experience becomes a belief:

“Gold is the safest investment.”

The next time someone in the family asks where they should put their money, the answer comes almost automatically.

“Buy gold.”

Not because someone has compared it with every other option.

Not because they have calculated what role gold should play in their portfolio.

But because they have seen it work.

And what we have personally seen carries enormous psychological weight.

Psychologists call this the Availability Heuristic.

Our brains find it easier to judge something when examples come easily to mind.

A story we remember vividly feels more important than statistics we have never experienced personally.

If your family made money in gold, that experience becomes available whenever you think about investing.

If someone close to you lost money in the stock market, that story can become your definition of the stock market.

One memorable experience can sometimes outweigh years of broader evidence.

And then comes Recency Bias.

When something has performed well recently, our minds naturally expect that performance to continue.

If gold has been rising, it can suddenly feel as though gold will always rise.

If equity markets have been falling, equity can suddenly feel permanently dangerous.

The recent past begins to look like the future.

This doesn’t mean your family’s experience was wrong.

It means we need to be careful about turning an experience into a universal rule.

Gold may have a place in a financial plan.

Equity may have a place.

Mutual funds, fixed income, insurance and other financial products may have their own roles.

The question isn’t:

“What worked for my family?”

The better question is:

“What role does this investment need to play in my financial plan?”

Because sometimes…

we inherit not just our family’s wealth,

but also their financial beliefs.
